Lament and Light

A British choral journey of hope
Join us in the beautiful Cathedral Church of St Marie, Sheffield, to explore in music the themes of death, sacrifice, and the hope of eternal heavenly life. We’ve crafted a programme of 20th- and 21st-century choral works by British composers that journeys from the sacrificial death of Christ and the pain of his mother Mary, to the ultimate hope of perfect eternal life, as portrayed vividly in words by priest and poet, John Donne:
Bring us, O Lord God, at our last awakening into the house and gate of Heaven,
to enter into that gate and dwell in that house,
where there shall be no darkness nor dazzling, but one equal light;
no noise nor silence, but one equal music;
no fears or hopes, but one equal possession;
no ends nor beginnings, but one equal eternity,
in the habitations of thy glory and dominion, world without end.
