Sheffield University Singers' Society

Sheffield University Singers’ Society is a professionally conducted choral society comprised of 4 choirs – Chorus, Socii, Melodia and Bombus. Beginning life in 1998, we cater to a wide range of abilities with Chorus, our original choir, open to everybody no matter their experience. It is also our largest choir with as many as 100 members at any one time while our other choirs typically consist of just 20-30 members. Formed shortly after, Socii and Meloida are our chamber choir and upper voices choir respectively while Bombus, our newest choir, caters to lower voices. It is recommended that to join the smaller choirs, members should be able to read sheet music or have experience singing in a choir as the pace is faster and performances pieces are usually more challenging.

Every choir performs in concerts 3 times a year in November, at Christmas and in May which are regularly attended by over 200 people. The Christmas and May concerts usually showcase works from the traditional choral repertoire while the November material is typically a mixture of popular music, musical songs, and theme tunes. Our last May concert series performed in May 2019 was to the theme of Flora and Fauna. Called ‘Out of the Ark and Into the Wild’ it was a two-concert run presenting works such as ‘The Lion and Albert’, ‘Linden Lea’ and ‘The Sprig of Thyme’. More highlights from previous concerts have included Haydn’s The Creation, Schubert’s Mass in G, Handel’s Messiah and Requiems by Faure, Mozart, Johnson, Verdi, and Rutter.

For our 20th anniversary in 2018 we were accompanied by Hallam Sinfonia to perform The Music Makers by Elgar and in 2022 we hope to work with Opera on Location for a performance of Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle. Alongside performing with various musical organisations we are eager to support local charities having raised money for The Lary Project and Sheffield Music Hub for the last 5 years.
