Hallam Choral Society, Sheffield is seeking a Musical Director to succeed Clara Rundell, starting in April 2023. We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and dedicated MD to encourage and challenge the choir in a positive, supportive and enjoyable way. We are looking for someone with the confidence to inspire, motivate and interact with the choir members and with the musical ability to continue to develop our singing and sight-reading skills. Hallam Choral Society is an established, mixed-voiced, non-auditioned choir, currently with a membership of about 50 singers. Membership has been significantly depleted as a result of the pandemic and we are seeking to rebuild to more like the 70-80 members we had before. The choir performs 3 or 4 concerts a year, featuring a mix of musical styles, including major choral works both traditional and modern, and lighter programmes. The choir aims to perform with professional soloists and orchestra for at least two of its annual concerts. For this reason it is important that the MD will have experience directing an orchestra as well as the choir. In March 2023 we will be part of the Classical Sheffield Festival, performing Mahler’s 2nd Symphony with Hallam Sinfonia, Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus and Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra. Our concert in July will be with Harlequin Brass Ensemble.

We rehearse on a Monday evening 7.45 – 9.45pm at Hallam Community Centre, S10 4BD.

Hallam Choral Society is a self-financing Registered Charity and is managed by an elected body of trustees, with the general running of the choir being by an elected committee. A high level of musical ability and a commitment to plan a schedule of music are a pre-requisite along with knowledge of the choral repertoire. The MD will work closely with the committee regarding music selection and concerts and would be required to attend some committee meetings. One of our aims is to encourage and attract young members who are supported by our Young Singers’ Policy.

Remuneration is based on a fee per rehearsal and per concert/event, negotiable with the trustees and discussed at interview. As part of the application process, candidates will be required to work for one half of a rehearsal with the choir on either the 20th or 27th February 2023.

Please apply by email including your CV outlining your suitability for this role to hallamchoralsociety@gmail.com. The closing date for applications is 31st January2023.
