For 1991, the year of the bicentenary of Mozart’s death, the conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt proposed that the most fitting tribute to the composer would be to perform none of his music – that way, the world would understand what would have been missed had Mozart never lived.
We take a different view and in the second of three concerts celebrating this uniquely gifted composer, Ensemble 360 presents his String Quintet in G minor. In Mozartian terms this piece is unusually melancholic in character, though his more typical uplifting spirit is restored in an infectiously lively finale.
"In my dreams of Heaven, I always see the great Masters gathered in a huge hall in which they all reside. Only Mozart has his own suite." Victor Borge
