Warm, evocative, sensual… arresting, daring, forward-looking.

Warm, evocative, sensual… arresting, daring, forward-looking.The music of Ravel and Debussy is all these things and more. Over one weekend in March, Ensemble 360, Catrin Finch and guests present the complete chamber music of these two radical and inspirational composers as part of our Festival of Chamber Music and Song from France’s Golden Age, presented in collaboration with University of Sheffield Concerts.

This concert presents Debussy and Ravel at the opposite ends of their careers. Debussy’s Trio is the work of a young man yet to find a personal voice, but it is effortlessly sweet and charming.

In contrast, Ravel’s Violin Sonata hints at the composer’s discovery and love of American jazz. Ravel’s only string quartet was much admired by Debussy, and while perceived as progressive and modern, Ravel considered it firmly rooted in classical tradition.

Programme

  • Debussy: Piano Trio in G
  • Ravel: Violin Sonata No. 2
  • Ravel: String Quartet in F
