Elizabeth Charlesworth - 'Female Feelings'

Elizabeth Charlesworth
Group type: Soloists

Part of the Classical Sheffield Weekend 2023

Elizabeth studied music at Newcastle (BA Hons) and Sheffield (MMus) universities. Early singing studies were with John Dethick and Jean Alistair. Elizabeth is a regular recitalist at churches and cathedrals in Yorkshire and beyond. She has a wide repertoire but is drawn in particular to English song, of which she has made a particular study. Currently working on the CharlesworthSharples project, recording available on Spotify.

For the Classical Weekend 2023, Elizabeth will be performing a concert titled 'Female Feelings.'

On a visit to England Haydn met Anne Hunter, a leading ‘Bluestocking’ of Georgian England. The result of the meeting was a fusion of words and music in 14 songs in English exploring the diverse feelings of womankind such as Recollection, Despair, Pleasing Pain and Fidelity among others. Haydn the writer of piano sonatas is very much to the fore here: there is a strong contrast between simple vocal line and virtuoso piano writing.

Included in the programme is the very bleak Das Verlassne Maglein and the coquettish Bescheidene Liebe of Hugo Wolf. We shall also meet some of the more famous and notorious females of the world of song.
