Delve into the vivid world of improvisation, exploring everything from text scores, to pitch guides, to graphic scores.

CoMA Sheffield delve into the vivid world of improvisation, exploring everything from text scores, to pitch guides, to graphic scores. Whilst wildly different in visual presentation, what these works all have in common, is the aspiration that the performers will go beyond the basic instructions and together achieve something more than the sum of the parts.

As Miles Davis put it, “Don’t play what’s there, play what’s not there.”

We welcome players, composers and singers. All abilities and experience welcome. You do not need to be able to read music.

There will also be an evening performance in which we are excited to premier new works by nonclassical Associate Composer, Harry Gorski Brown and CoMA Sheffield Musical Director, Louise Vincent.

Playing What's Not There: Concert

The venue is wheelchair accessible – it has a ramp and an accessible toilet.

CoMA Sheffield is part of an international network of new music ensembles creating opportunities for all musicians to create and play contemporary music. This workshop is part of our Festival of Contemporary Music for All 2024 with many ensembles performing in the UK and beyond throughout March.
